How to Winterize Irrigation System: Essential Steps

Blog Article

Winterizing an irrigation system prevents costly damage from freezing water. Begin by shutting off the main water supply and opening all drain valves to release residual water. For above-ground systems, use an air compressor (50-80 PSI) to blow out pipes, starting from the main line and working to each zone. Remove sprinkler heads and store them indoors. For underground systems, ensure all valves are open to allow complete drainage. Wrap exposed valves, backflow preventers, and pipes with insulated foam sleeves or heat tape. Avoid leaving hoses connected, as trapped water can expand and crack fittings. Schedule winterization before the first hard freeze (typically late fall) to protect the system’s longevity.
